Wondering what to wear for your engagement session? Don’t stress! I’m here to help.
Now, before you start scouring every online store for the perfect outfit, let me give you some advice. Take it from someone who’s photographed several beautiful bride-to-be’s. Here are a few tips to get you looking and feeling your best for your special session.
Less distraction
When it comes to engagement shots, the focus should be on you and your S.O. and the love you share. When selecting your outfit, opt for clothing that’s not too distracting. Really bright colors, logos and busy patterns are often distracting and take away from you and your S.O. If you love bright hues, you can always add a pop of color with an accessory. Generally speaking, subtle clothing with less distractions look better on camera.
Own it..as YOU
It’s important to wear something you not only feel comfortable in, but something that allows you to be confident as it’s a reflection of your unique personal style. No need to get fancied up in a sleek cocktail dress if you feel sexier in a pair of your favorite faded jeans. Authenticity is key and keeps you at ease in front of the camera. I always encourage my clients to dress for comfort and what suits their personal style. After all, the photos are about the two of you. You’re not here to impress others.
Coordinate with your significant other
While “twinning” is cute with your BFF, it can look a little cheesy with your partner. However, it’s important to complement each other. An easy way to ensure this is by choosing solid colored clothing over prints and classic looks over trendy styles.
Talk with your photographer
If you follow my photography on social media, you’ll notice that most of my clients gravitate towards a more laid back, casual style. Most photographers are versatile and able to adapt to different styles, but in order to capture your essence authentically, you want to find someone who’s aesthetic aligns with who you are. It’s important to meet your photographer beforehand or check out their work to ensure it’s a good fit.
Consider your location
It wouldn’t make much sense to show up to a beach session wearing sky-high stilettos or a flannel top in a swanky hotel. While this may seem obvious, you’d be surprised at how many couples do not dress appropriately for their surroundings. This is partly due to the fact that most people want to wear their favorite outfits which are not always suitable for the location they’re shooting in. Think about the overall vibe you’d like to create. Are you going for a shabby chic, rustic look? If so, consider neutrals layered with cozy elements like woolen scarves and beanies. Maybe you’re going for something more romantic and ethereal. Stick to soft colors and billowy fabrics.
Find a style that flatters your body
While I’m all about taking bold risks and embracing your body, it’s important to wear something that makes you feel your absolute best. Do some research. Pinterest has some great inspiration and I always send my clients a Pinterest gallery to help with clothing ideas and the tone of the session. Remember what looks great on the runway, doesn’t always translate well on camera for a portrait or engagement shoot. Again, timeless trumps trendy.
Enhance your features
Okay, I admit it – I’m slightly minimalistic. I prefer clean chambray shirts and a practical pair of mules over bold prints and statement heels. I think it you own it flaunt it. The goal is to enhance your beautiful features while maintaining a natural look.
Since this is an engagement session, this is the best time to test out your wedding hair and makeup artist. You’ll get a good idea of what works and what doesn’t. This includes if you have too much makeup on, or not enough and how your hair looks. It will also allow you to gage what’s comfortable.
Remember, there are no hard rules when it comes to your engagement session. In the end, wear what makes you feel good. Confidence looks great on anyone.
