One of the many treats of working as a wedding photographer is witnessing the magical, intimate moments of unconditional love between two people. Couple that with a stunning backdrop and a group of the kindest, loveliest bunch to hang out with and it’s easy to see why this is one of the best jobs in the world. I can’t wait to share this laid-back Brooklands Farm wedding in Muskoka with you!
A day on the lake
My love affair with the beautiful Muskoka has grown even more since shooting Nicole and Justin’s Brooklands Farm wedding in Bracebridge. I was able to capture every moment alongside my fellow friend and photographer Wendy Shepherd who I got to second shoot for.
The entire day was a reflection of the bride and groom’s relaxed, cozy style. From the handmade signage to the vintage china thrifted from local Muskoka shops, everything had a unique personal touch, making for a truly bespoke wedding ceremony and reception. Lavender was placed with care at each seat and guests were treated to homemade bitters made by the groom himself.
The day commenced with getting ready portraits which were shot in Bala on the Moon River. The men readied in Justin and Nicole’s future home on the building site. This was also the location where the bride and groom camped out on their wedding night, snuggled up in a pitched tent. Exposed timber and open space made for some amazingly intimate and rustic photos. While simple and modest, the unfinished space was a surprisingly beautiful backdrop. The groomsmen enjoyed some pre-ceremony drinks in wooden hobbit-esque beer steins which of course, mirrored the natural rustic wedding, theme.
A cozy affair
It was a chilly, rainy morning which only enhanced the coziness of it all. While some couples might run from the rain, Nicole and Justin embraced it full-heartedly. Their playful spirit came through in their photos and I found myself smiling from ear to ear during the editing process. The clouds parted for the ceremony revealing a perfect rainbow. I mean, can you ask for a better more picturesque scenario?!
Besides the enchanting wedding itself, I was especially moved and inspired by this group’s love and kindness. There was an indescribable warmth that radiated throughout the day. A laid-back wedding calls for some laid-back activities. There was dancing, laughing, Jenga playing, and music performed by friends of the bride and groom. The grandparents played the role of flower girl and ring-bearer. The beloved family dogs were also included in the ceremony. Nicole, the bride did her own makeup and wore a wreath of flowers in her hair. Everything was truly unique, personable and special. It’s weddings like these that remind me why I do what I do.
I can’t wait to shoot another Brooklands Farm wedding!
